CES 2014: Formula E Premiers All-Electric Race Car

The Spark-Renault SRT_01E, the first professional battery-powered race car, shows off with a few donut spins

Celia Gorman

Formula E debuted their electric race car in a parking lot Tuesday at CES 2014. For those who have been following IEEE Spectrum’s coverage of these upcoming races, there wasn’t much new information on the Spark-Renault SRT_01E. But we did get a chance to see the car spin a few donuts and take a peek underneath at the guts.

The all-electric races will begin in September in 10 cities around the world, but not on tracks. All the teams will use the Spark-Renault to speed through city streets, and, instead of traditional pit stops, the drivers will relay between two cars mid-race, allowing the pit crew to recharge the batteries.
