  1. New top supercomputers list

It's that time of year again. In June and in November the supercomputing world submits its scores to see who has outFLOPped whom. The new list at top500.org shows that Roadrunner remains on top, but only because it's had some upgrades in the last 6 months. The good folks at top500 say Roadrunner (which is among the most energy efficient because of its Cell processors) narrowly fended off a newcomer, Oak Ridge National Lab's Jaguar, which became only the second machine to top a petaflop. 1 DOE/NNSA/LANL Roadrunner 2 Oak Ridge National Laboratory Jaguar XT-5 3 NASA/Ames Research Center/NAS Pleiades 4 DOE/NNSA/LLNL BlueGene/L 5 Argonne National Laboratory …

  2. PlayStation3s power biotech research project

Thanks to the power of distributing computing, scientists studying protein folding have a petaflop of computing power at their disposal. Thatâ''s one quadrillion floating point equations per second; kind of like having three Blue Genes (the fastest supercomputer in the world) in the back room. They hit that magic number yesterday. The project is run out of Stanford, but the call I got today to tell me the big news came from Sony. Because roughly 75 percent of those quadrillion flops are being contributed by Sony PlayStation3s. Protein folding involves amino acid chains inside cells …
