  1. The robot lover's guide to the holidays

It's that time of year for cookies, lights, trees, gifts, and holiday cheer. What better way to celebrate than with robots? Gifts Last year we had our robot kit gift guide, and this year Spectrum's gift guide includes a few more robots. I've also become more familiar with MAKE Magazine's products this year (I'm currently using the MAKE controller for a project, and it's very easy to use) so I suggest poking around the MAKE robot kits store to see what they've got. And don't forget to wrap these goodies in robot wrapping paper. Food Decorate cookies made …

  2. "WALL-E" is an adorable movie. Go see it.

I saw "WALL-E" last night with some folks from work and it was universally agreed to be an excellent movie. The characters are fantastic, the animation is as always impressive, and the story is fun. Fans of Apple products will find a few winks to Macs and iPods, and I'm pretty sure EVE is exactly what an Apple robot would look like. For his part, WALL-E bears a striking resemblance to Johnny 5. 3. Games are supposed to be fun...

...and I say that knowing full-well that one has to first define what "fun" means. Why am I saying this? Yehuda is a smart guy, I've read his stuff in all sorts of places, and he has a fairly-obviously working brain. But this is just sloppy.

  4. The Anti-Game?

Eric-Jon Rössel Waugh has an excellent article on gamecareerguide.com on Animal Crossing, one of my favorite games. "Ambition and Compulsory Design in Animal Crossing" deals with games, goals, the motivations for play, and the platform context of a game. Well worth a read. He calls Animal Crossing "the anti-game": there is no punishment for inaction, there is no real conflict, there is no major obstacle to collecting the widgets that, in most games, require serious effort to earn. This game should make everyone question their definition of what a game is, and what is necessary for a compelling …

  5. "It's funny because it's poisonous."

Joystiq has posted an article on how to make a Dr Zoidberg Mii on your Wii. Which again, reminds me of Nintendo's genius: each of the latest generation of consoles vowed to transform the entertainment landscape, yet the expensive PS3 and XBox 360 are providing more of the same, while the underpowered, cheap Wii is making everyone look and think.
