IEEE COVID-19 Resources

IEEE Smart Village System Delivers Solar Power to Nigerian COVID-19 Isolation Center - When the coronavirus spread to Ilorin, the state capital of Kwara in western Nigeria, a medical center was built to isolate and treat the rapidly increasing number of COVID-19 patients. Shaybis Nigeria donated a SunBlazer IV solar-powered system to provide electricity to the facility. The system, which was designed by IEEE Smart Village volunteers, will provide electricity to the first wing of the four-wing facility.

The University of Rhode Island's IEEE Student Branch Offers Remote Tutoring to EE Students to Supplement Their Online Courses - The COVID-19 pandemic has forced universities around the world to close their campuses and offer classes online. Faculty members and students have had to adjust to this new way of teaching and learning. Remote tutoring sessions, conducted through the Webex video conferencing program, offer students the chance to not only ask questions about the material presented in class but also gives them a way to socialize with each other.

How Many People Did it Take to Build the Great Pyramid? - Not nearly as many as old estimates would have you believe. Given that some 4,600 years have elapsed since the completion of the Great Pyramid of Giza, the structure stands remarkably intact. We may never know exactly how the pyramid was built, but even so, we can say with some confidence how many people were required to build it. This back-of-the-envelope calculation is based on simple physics.

IEEE COVID-19 Resources

As we weather the COVID-19 pandemic together, check here for updates about IEEE members developing technologies to fight the virus, the resources available to you from across IEEE, coping strategies from engineers around the world, and opportunities to get involved in the fight.

PAL Robotics Customizable Bots Could Be the Next Frontline Workers - PAL Robotics is modifying its existing base models to aid in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. Based in Barcelona, the company's base models are designed for a variety of tasks, including socializing with people and transporting items. With the right software, the robot will be able to ask COVID-19 patients questions related to their symptoms, reducing how often healthcare workers must come into close contact with patients.

DIY Ventilators for COVID-19 Could Be a Vital Stopgap - COVID-19 patients can find it difficult to breathe as the virus infects the upper or lower parts of their respiratory tract. As respiration is a requirement for life, it is not surprising that the mechanical ventilators found in intensive care units have been in great demand during the past few months. IEEE Fellow Ravinder Dahiya and Andrew Hart get you up to speed on DIY devices being developed to increase the supply.

Economics Drives Ray-Gun Resurgence

Laser weapons, cheaper by the shot, should work well against drones and cruise missiles

4 min read
In an artist’s rendering, a truck is shown with five sets of wheels—two sets for the cab, the rest for the trailer—and a box on the top of the trailer, from which a red ray is projected on an angle, upward, ending in the silhouette of an airplane, which is being destroyed

Lockheed Martin's laser packs up to 300 kilowatts—enough to fry a drone or a plane.

Lockheed Martin

The technical challenge of missile defense has been compared with that of hitting a bullet with a bullet. Then there is the still tougher economic challenge of using an expensive interceptor to kill a cheaper target—like hitting a lead bullet with a golden one.

Maybe trouble and money could be saved by shooting down such targets with a laser. Once the system was designed, built, and paid for, the cost per shot would be low. Such considerations led planners at the Pentagon to seek a solution from Lockheed Martin, which has just delivered a 300-kilowatt laser to the U.S. Army. The new weapon combines the output of a large bundle of fiber lasers of varying frequencies to form a single beam of white light. This laser has been undergoing tests in the lab, and it should see its first field trials sometime in 2023. General Atomics, a military contractor in San Diego, is also developing a laser of this power for the Army based on what’s known as the distributed-gain design, which has a single aperture.
