As more is known about the consequences of all those jarring hits that American football players experience, the louder the calls have grown for improvement in the most basic piece of safety equipment—the helmet. Though technologists have yet to invent a helmet that prevents concussions and the cumulative effects of repeated blows to the head, advances such as Riddell’s InSite head-impact monitoring system are aimed at getting a player off the field if he’s suffered a brain injury. By means of a sensor unit inside the helmet, the InSite system records the location and severity of a blow and relays this data to a wireless handheld device; software provides a coordinated analysis of each player’s history of head hits.
