How radio-frequency identification and I got personal

When I open my front door, I don't reach for a key. When I log into my computer, I don't touch my keyboard. When I start my motorcycle, again, no key needed. Instead, I just wave my hand and I'm in business.

I was one of the first do-it-yourselfers to have a radio-frequency identification (RFID) tag implanted under my skin. In fact, I have two--one between the thumb and index finger in my left hand, the other in the matching spot on my right hand.

New number formats and basic computations emerge to speed up AI training

Recent developments in AI have been astounding, but so are the costs of training neural networks to do their astounding feats. The biggest, such as the language model GPT-3 and the art generator DALL-E 2, take several months to train on a cluster of high-performance GPUs, costing millions of dollars and taking up millions of billions of billions of basic computations.

The training capabilities of processing units have been growing rapidly, as much as doubling in the last year. To keep the trend going, researchers are digging down into the most basic building blocks of computation, the way computers represent numbers.

A New Fund Helps IEEE HKN Student Chapters Flourish

Thanks to funding from the IEEE Student Chapter Support Grant program, the Delta Omega Chapter at the University of Hawaii, in Manoa, was able to hold an induction ceremony for these members.

University chapters are the lifeblood of IEEE-Eta Kappa Nu, the organization’s honor society. There are 269 chapters at universities worldwide.

A strong chapter helps ensure that members have a fulfilling experience. For the 2021–2022 academic year, IEEE-HKN chapters reported approximately 92,000 hours of activity and service, much more than the previous year—when chapters reported approximately 62,000 hours—and other years.
