THE INSTITUTEAlthough female engineers have made great strides in the past few decades, the number of them in high-level positions is still low compared with male engineers. Increasing the retention rates of middle- to senior-level women in technology is the goal of this year’s IEEE Women in Engineering International Leadership Conference (WIE ILC), to be held on 23 and 24 May in Austin, Texas.

“The IEEE WIE ILC continues to grow in importance as a unique event with an agenda specifically tailored to help support and sustain women in technology fields around the world,” says IEEE Senior Member Kathy Herring Hayashi, the conference chair.

This year’s event features panel discussions, a career fair, and workshops. Keynote sessions are expected to cover empowerment, leadership, and diversity and inclusion.

Scheduled speakers include Candace Worley, vice president and chief technical strategist at McAfee; Victoria B. Mitchell, vice president of the technology services group at Arm; and Negar Feher, vice president of product and business development at Momentus.

Other sessions will provide updates on blockchain and other technologies, organizers say.

You can register for the conference at the IEEE WIE ILC website. The cost is US $595 for IEEE WIE members and $775 for others. There are also discounted rates for IEEE student members and life members.

VIRTUAL TRACKS

IEEE WIE is holding a series of free virtual panel discussions before the event, moderated by tech leaders. At the sessions, scheduled for every week leading up to conference, you can enhance your leadership skills. Topics include change management, non-profit boards, and patents. You can sign up to attend the upcoming sessions (to be held on 25 April, 2 May, and 9 May) and watch the others on demand.

The Institute plans to cover the conference in person, so be sure to follow us on Twitter (@InstituteIEEE). Use #WIELead for news and updates throughout the event.
