Scifi writer and visionary Arthur C. Clarke laid to rest

Sir Arthur C. Clarke was buried in Colombo today. At the funeral, which was attended by his family and friends and fans, music played from 2001: A Space Odyssey. As most people know, Sir Arthur wrote the screenplay for the film.

Sir Arthur left written instructions that his funeral be strictly secular: "Absolutely no religious rites of any kind, relating to any religious faith, should be associated with my funeral."

He wanted to be remembered primarily as a writer, he said shortly before his death in a video that he made on his 90th birthday last December:

"Iâ''ve had a diverse career as a writer, underwater explorer, space promoter and science populariser. Of all these, I want to be remembered most as a writer â'' one who entertained readers, and, hopefully, stretched their imagination as well."

Sri Lankan president Mahinda Rajapaksa annouced a moment of silence in Sir Arthur's honor; it coincided with the ceremony.

Sir Arthur died in the early hours of March 19 (Sri

Lanka time) at Colombo's Apollo hospital from respiratory complications.

As per his wishes, Sir Arthur's gravestone will read:

Here lies Arthur C. Clarke

He never grew up and did not stop growing

RIP, Sir Arthur.
