The U.S. Air Force originally awarded the contract for this $15 billion next-generation helicopter program to Boeing in 2006, but the GAO upheld protests against the award by Lockheed Martin Corp. and United Technologies Corp. The contract was again awarded to Boeing in 2007, and again the GAO upheld a new protest by Lockheed Martin. The Air Force is now reviewing bids and is expected to make a selection next year. |

The $6 billion missile program began in 1995 following the cancellation of the Tri-Service Standoff Attack Missile program due to cost overruns approaching 300 percent. Lockheed Martin was given approval to start JASSM production in 2004, but production was soon halted after problems emerged during flight-testing. The Air Force resumed production in June 2008, after missile reliability was improved. |
