Guess What? Yet Another UK Government Lost Data Disk!!
Ah, once more into a UK government data breach. Today's London papers are filled with yet another woeful tale of a lost computer disk (some say a hard drive) that contained the personal details of some 5,000 employees of the National Offender Management Service - many of whom are prison officers and probation workers.
Given past history, the loss is not surprising but what is curious is that the information was lost July 2007. However, the contractor who lost the data, EDS UK (now an HP company as it proudly declares), only told the Prison Service in July 2008 that it lost it. Furthermore, Jack Straw, the Justice Secretary, was only informed by his people about the loss yesterday. Needless to say, Mr. Straw is highly irked, and is demanding a full inquiry into the loss and why he wasn't immediate told about it.
With this loss, the UK government (or better said its contractors) has managed to lose data both on its prisoners as well as on it prison officers.
A weird sort of symmetry in that.
