Sand Trap Continued

« Back to the main article

Of Machines and Men: Some of Ohio State University's team [above]—Jim Fravert, Gary Schmiedel, Ümit Özgüner, and Keith Redmill—with their Grand Challenge entry, the heavyweight TerraMax. Right: William L. ("Red") Whittaker of Carnegie Mellon with Sandstorm. Both robots qualified for the desert race, but TerraMax was undone by some bushes at the 2-kilometer mark. Sandstorm traveled the farthest of any competitor, but it got hung up on a rock 12 km into the 320-km course through the Mojave Desert.
