How the Survey Was Conducted

On behalf of IEEE Spectrum, The Response Center, a market research company in Fort Washington, Pa. (http://www.response-center.com), conducted a Web-based research study among IEEE Fellows. The questionnaire was developed by Spectrum in conjunction with The Response Center. Data collection took place over a period beginning 21 October 2003 and ending 12 November 2003. An e-mail address list of 3047 Fellows was provided by IEEE. A total of 1038 Fellows responded to the survey, for a response rate of 34 percent.

All numbers reported are percentages unless otherwise noted. These percentages have been rounded to the nearest whole number; thus, percentages may not add to 100 percent. Respondents who answered "don't know" or chose not to respond to a question were excluded from reported results for that particular question. Thus, the number answering each question varied to some degree.
